Introduction

Killiney Historical Society, an initiative of Killiney Village Residents’ Association, is delighted to announce a celebration of the history of the evolution of transport in the Killiney area over a period in excess of 200 years. The weekend will involve a series of talks on the topic including horsepower, trains, buses and cars along with an exhibition, slideshow and guided walks. We are excited to have a number of exhibits from the National Transport Museum on display in the Village and children’s activities will also take place. Food and refreshments will be available. Admission Free, All welcome.

Our Speakers and Guides

Gerald Beesley served as Commissioner for Railway Safety in Ireland 2010-17 and prior to that held various engineering positions in CIE and overseas. Gerald is the author of a biography of Col. Eoghan O’Brien of Mount Eagle, Killiney and co-author of an illustrated history of the Dublin & South Eastern Railway.

Alice Cullen is our local historian and Killiney resident. Alice’s family has lived in Killiney for generations and she has guided historical walks in the area for many years.

Rob Goodbody is a building historian and President of the Rathmichael Historical Society. He has published a number of books, including several relating to the Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown area.

John Kelleher lectures on Transport Studies in TU Dublin Bolton Street and is Chairperson of the board of management of the National Transport Museum.

Michael McShane is a Killiney resident and chair of Killiney Historical Society. Michael hosts the killineyhistory.ie website which is dedicated to recording the houses, monuments and residents of Killiney/Ballybrack and surrounding areas.


Parking

We would encourage everybody attending to walk or use public transport as parking in the vicinity will be very limited due to outdoor displays. If you have space available please ask family and friends attending to park at your house and walk to the event. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated. Please note that the Carry Centre will be available from 10am – 6pm on Saturday and from 1pm – 6pm on Sunday.


Volunteers Needed!

We are looking for 30 volunteers to support our historical ‘Killiney on the Move’ event.

We need attendants for the following roles:

  • Exhibition attendants (upstairs in the Druids Chair)
  • Visitor attendants, to ensure the safe movement of visitors around the Village
  • Car park attendant at the Carry Hall
  • Volunteers to support the children’s crafts team at the Carry Hall
