A Trip through the History of Dalkey Island by Peadar Curran

I was fortunate to grow up in Dalkey and to spend time at Coliemore Harbour which included observing the archaeological excavations on the Island during the 1950s. The talk will cover the historical aspects of the Island from the first settlers in the Mesolithic, Neolithic and Bronze Age periods through to the early Christian and Viking eras and the later fortifications of the Napoleonic times. I hope to share some perhaps less known and interesting images of the Island.

The talk will take place in the upstairs lounge of the Druid’s Chair pub on Tuesday 4th February at 8.00pm. Admission is €5 and all are welcome.

I moved to Ballinteer in 1970 and after retiring joined the local history group of the Ballinteer Active Retirement Association (BARA) and was a graduate of the Lord Mayor’s Local History course in 2016. I contributed to the BARA publication Ballinteer a Local History edited by Sean Magee and was co-author with Nick Ryan of Ticknock the History of a Beautiful Valley. I have contributed articles to the Dublin Historical Record and the Obelisk as well as delivering talks to several local history societies.
