Dalkey WW2 Coast Watchers and ‘EIRE’

Sorrento Park and Hawk Cliff below Vico Road played a special part in safeguarding Neutral Ireland in WW2 in 1939/45. Almost 80 years later, in February 2017, a Dalkey Tidy Towns team uncovered long lost evidence of how a small group of local men were drawn in to playing a vital role in defending Ireland. For their contribution, they received little recognition. Here is a short story of how an attempt was made to correct this oversight.

Des Burke-Kennedy, BBS MA, studied Business, Russian and Philosophy in Trinity College Dublin. With a strong interest in local history Des is the author of ‘Murder, Mutiny and the Muglins’ (2020) and he is a regular contributor of historical articles in the Dalkey Community Council Newsletter. He lives in Dalkey and his home overlooks the Muglin’s Rock. Des was deeply involved with the restoration of the ‘EIRE’ sign in 2017.
