The Victorian ‘New Town’ on Killiney Hill that never happened.

Killiney Historical Society is delighted to present this video recording of the first lecture of 2024 which was delivered by local historian John Martin on 6th February in The Druid’s Chair in Killiney to a packed house.

John’s talk concentrates on the highly ambitious plans to develop a ‘new town’ of over 180 dwellings on Killiney Hill in 1840. John has unearthed new insights into this fascinating topic and this is a very interesting and informative talk.

John is a retired town planner who has lived in Dalkey since 1983, and is currently researching the history of the area with a view to publication. His Historic Towns Atlas of Dungarvan, Co. Waterford, was published by the Royal Irish Academy in 2020. His article on the failed urban development at Obelisk Hill in the 1840s appears in the current issue of History Ireland.
