Bullock: lands, harbour and castle. A talk by John Martin.

A talk to be held at 8pm on Tuesday 3rd March 2026 in The Druid’s Chair Pub, Killiney.

Aerial view of Bullock harbour

Cistercian monks from St Mary’s Abbey in Dublin established a farm estate at Bullock about 1000 years ago, developing a fishing harbour and a protective castle. For most of the intervening centuries, Bullock remained as a distinctive settlement, with a strong maritime tradition, but since the 1840s it was gradually absorbed within the growing township of Dalkey.

John Martin studied history at UCD but spent his career as a town planner, including a stint in the former Dun Laoghaire Corporation. He has lived in Bullock for the past 40 years and his book “Dalkey: an illustrated history” was published in 2025.

The talk will take place at 8pm in the upstairs lounge of the Druid’s Chair Pub in Killiney and admission is €5. All are welcome!

This talk replaces a previously advertised talk by Jamie Moran on the Killiney connections with Deansgrange Cemetry. Instead of a talk Jamie has kindly offered to give our members a guided tour of the Cemetery on a Saturday in late April. Date to be confirmed and notices will be sent to members in advance.
