Welcome

Hi All,

Firstly, a very warm welcome to the 50 new subscribers to our newsletter who signed up at our hugely successful ‘Killiney on the Move’ event last weekend.

Killiney on the Move, 25^th-26^th May 2024

We were delighted with the response to the exhibition and we are very grateful to our speakers, Gerald Beesley, John Kelleher and Rob Goodbody, who generously gave of their time to enlighten us on their specialised areas of interest covering the railway, trams, roads and numerous other forms of transport. Not forgetting Pól Ó Duibhir who, unfortunately unable to join us this weekend, has been an inspiration and constant supporter from the outset.

Alice Cullen, our resident local historian, led an excellent guided tour of Killiney village and beyond. Attendance records were broken and we look forward to future walks and talks by Alice.

A very special thank you to Simone Walsh, Mary Holohan, Louise O’Sheehan, the fantastic volunteers  and everybody associated with Killiney Village Residents Association who gave generously of their time to make it such a success. We acknowledge the exceptional professionalism of Ger Garland who put in countless hours on the design of the exhibition panels and promotional material which brought a world class finish to the event.

Also we want to thank Kieran and all the staff at the Druid’s Chair Pub for providing the venue for the event (and also our regular meetings) along with their professional and courteous service. Thanks also to everyone associated with the Carry Centre for their help and support. The children’s craft event organised by Louise was greatly enjoyed and highly praised by all who took part.

We wish to express our gratitude to Pippa McIntosh and The Hon Gary Gray AO, Australian Ambassador, who contributed greatly behind the scenes in the run up to our history weekend and who kindly provided the wine for our launch event.

We are grateful to Deirdre Black, Heritage Officer DLR CoCo for her unwavering support. Deirdre was instrumental in enabling the grants which part funded the event and DLR CoCo deserve our special thanks.

John Kelleher and his team from the National Transport Museum brought out R1, the oldest double deck bus in the country, and our very own ‘honey cart’ which added immensely to the proceedings. Dairyglen Ice Cream and the vintage bikes brought along by Philip Maguire contributed to the festive atmosphere created in the village and we are grateful for that.

And finally we would like to thank the local residents, transport experts and our national institutions who contributed an immense amount of material to our event.

Killiney Historical Society Journal 2024.

It is planned to publish a journal later in the year which we hope will be the first of many. The theme for this year will be transport and will capture much of the excellent information which was presented at the exhibition.

Upcoming talk next week.

We are delighted to present a talk by Pippa McIntosh on 4^th June at 8.00pm in the Druid’s Chair Pub. This talk will focus on her soon to be released book, Abbey Lea – A Killiney History, in advance of its launch at the Dalkey Book Festival on 10^th June. Her talk at the Dalkey event is sold out so we are privileged to get a preview of what promises to be an important addition to the published works covering Killiney history. Pippa will talk on the Killiney specific aspects of her research and we advise you to come early to avoid disappointment. Details of the talk and how to obtain copies of the book are available HERE

Pippa has been a constant supporter of KHS and www.killineyhistory.ie and her infectious enthusiasm has  inspired us all.

Autumn/Winter  schedule and Membership.

This will be our final talk of the Spring/Summer season. Our Autumn/Winter schedule is being finalised and we will contact you with details in due course.  We will also be setting up a membership structure for the recently formed Killiney Historical Society and we will keep you informed of this.
