SUMMARY:Abbey Lea\, A Killiney History
DESCRIPTION:Launching at the Dalkey Book Festival 13-16 June 2024\nAbbey Lea on Killiney Hill Road has been the residence of the Australian Ambassador to Ireland since 1965. The wife of the current Australian Ambassador to Ireland\, Pippa McIntosh has spent the last 3 years researching the history of the house before it was purchased by the Australian Government and uncovered some fantastic stories about not only the house\, but the local Ballybrack/Killiney/Dalkey/Shankill area as well. Pippa has written a book which will launch at this year’s Dalkey Book Festival. \nFrom Harry Clarke procuring contacts and commissions at the house\, discovering Oliver St John Gogarty’s poetry about raucous dinner parties\, to the murder of the gardener on Strathmore Road by the IRA the night the Ballybrack RIC Barracks was burnt down (May 1920)\, this book provides researched context and insight into Killiney life from more than 100 years ago.

SUMMARY:Robert Warren and Queenstown
DESCRIPTION:Queenstown- The Victorian ‘New Town’ on Killiney Hill that never happened\n\n\n\nby John Martin\n \n\n\n\nKilliney Historical Society is delighted to announce the first lecture of 2024 which will be delivered by local historian John Martin. \nJohn’s talk will focus on the highly ambitious plans to develop a ‘new town’ of over 180 dwellings on Killiney Hill in 1840. His Historic Towns Atlas of Dungarvan\, Co. Waterford\, was published by the Royal Irish Academy in 2020. His article on the failed urban development at Obelisk Hill in the 1840s appears in the current issue of History Ireland. \nThe talk will take place in the Druid’s Chair Pub upstairs Lounge at 8pm on Tuesday 6th February. \nAdmission is €5\, all welcome.
